SAFIRE currently operates across Manicaland, Masvingo, and Matabeleland South provinces, targeting marginalised rural and peri-urban communities in the lowveld region. These areas are characterized by low, erratic rainfall and are prone to severe climate shocks, including droughts and floods, which critically impede livelihoods.
We drive sustainable change by focusing on four core areas:
- Nature-Based Enterprises: We develop businesses (honey, mopane worm, Marula, Baobab, etc.) benefiting over 33,000 households. These enterprises have raised the average monthly household income by $165.
- Ecosystem Restoration: We restore degraded lands, protect wetlands, and support irrigation schemes. Our work has resulted in over 597,000 trees planted and 50,000 hectares restored through reforestation, with 5,600 hectares of arable land protected.
- Sustainable Agriculture: We promote climate-smart practices like conservation agriculture and agroforestry to improve food security and soil health.
- Clean Energy: We introduce technologies, such as Tsotso stoves, reducing deforestation by 60% across 9 districts of Zimbabwe.
