Emmah Mafemani is an Environmental Safeguarding Committee member in Ward 15 Davata, Chiredzi
Until recently, her community had no Environmental Safeguarding Committee. Forests were disappearing, rivers were drying up, soils were poor, and land was becoming less productive
Through SAFIRE’s training and support, community members were mobilised and trained to form Environmental Safeguarding Committees. Emmah was elected to serve.
Today, Emmah and her committee are leading the community on a journey to restore and regenerate their natural resources- planting trees, protecting rivers and wetlands, preventing bush fires, promoting sustainable land use and encouraging soil conservation practices. In the past 8 months than 1000 trees have been planted in Chiredzi district alone and more than 90 people including traditional leaders and resource monitors have been trained on environmental safeguarding.
